1984: Book I, Chapter V - VIII

In this section, we learn even more about the corruption of the Party. Winston works in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, where he changes documents to make it look as though Big Brother is always right. For example, Winston invents Comrade Ogilvy in place of Comrade Withers, who has now become an unperson. The Party even lies about increasing chocolate rations when in fact, they had lowered it a day before. Under the Party, sex has become merely a way to create new Party members and all pleasure once involved with it is now gone. In order to find pleasure, Winston has sex with a prole prostitute. The proles, who live in poor conditions but have more freedom than Outer Party members, are who Winston believes can take down Big Brother as they are connected to the past.
